Student Film Opening Marking

Within our lesson, we watched a variety of previous film openings and was told to look at the mark scheme to ensure we knew what we was looking out for. Once we looked over the mark scheme we understood what needed to be incorporated within the film and we started to mark and analyse the variety of the film openings.

Michael
  • Camera angles and pans were used throughout the whole film.
  • Music corresponds with the theme of the opening.
  • Shots were relevant to the story.
  • It doesn't give clues or make you ask questions. There is no enigma code.
  • In the beginning you can hear the background noise over the music which makes it seems amateur.
36 marks - C (level 3)

A schools nightmare
  • Smooth pan throughout the entire film.
  • Music helped with tension and linked with the editing.
  • There is enigma code.
  • Lighting was relevant to the theme portrayed.
  • Props help build up the clues shown and questions asked.
  • Doesn't give much away to the audience.
Luna
  • Music corresponds with the theme of the film opening.
  • Variety of shots used.
  • Camera shakes during the pans.
  • Bad lighting on the beach, couldn't see clearly what was happening.
  • There is no background noise which takes the attention away from the main focus.
  • The main title is after the film.
Poscig
  • Title at the start.
  • It hasn't got creative text or font which links with the theme.
  • Transition between two shots which links all events together.
  • Different shot from  the car which shows variety.
  • Music helps with tension.

Abducted
This is my own researched film opening and I found that this one specifically stood out purely because of the creativity and the effort that is portrayed throughout the whole film opening.
Within this film opening the features that stand out to make it as good as it is, the filming is what makes it how good it is. Along with the filming, the camera quality also helps with this. They used a variety of different angles and shots to make sure that the film is original.

Final Prelim Task and Evaluation

Final Prelim Film

rt

Evaluation:

Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Ale and Leah and we tried to work out each task equally between us however, Leah and I did quite a bit more than Ale did due to him being on holiday. Me, Leah and Ale was all apart of the film and was involved within the acting side. The task can be divided by filming, acting and editing and me and Leah did it all. I did all of the tasks, with Leah doing three and Ale completing two as well. We didn't manage to distribute the task equally however, the outcome we was pleased with. Ale draw the storyboards and played a part in the acting and filming.I carried out acting, filming, editing and the production diaries  More over, Leah also acted and edited as well as filling out the shooting schedule.
How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
We planned our sequence by making some ideas on a piece of paper and piecing our best ideas in an order that would make sense. After piecing our thoughts together, we decided to make a storyboard to make sure that when we filmed it would be in an established order that would make sense to the audience. Processes we used was the making of storyboards, shooting schedules and looking around a variety of horror films to help us receive some inspiration.
What theorists did you think you could apply to your task?

What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
There was various amounts of different factors that we had to take into consideration before going ahead with the shooting of our task. The main one being the location of our film which correlates with our planning. During our plan we had to make a list of locations and places of where we wanted to film. As we was restricted to school grounds we had to make sure we shot our scenes during the time that lessons took place so that there was no background noise or unwanted behaviour in the background of our scenes. Another factor that we had to take into consideration was that Ale and Leah couldn't be there for most of the days of editing so after Leah put the footage into order and cropped some clips, I edited the rest of the footage with transitions and music. I also added a voice over within the film so that one bit of the footage didn't have just no sound. It was also to add a variety of skills to the film.
How successful was your sequence? Please identify what worked well and with hindsight what would you improve/do differently?
Our sequence was successful in a way that it makes sense to us and the majority of the audience who have viewed it, and it is a lot compacted into 3 minutes which shows the seriousness and commitment put into the sequence. A main thing that worked well was our understanding of camera skills and the use of the tripod, which also helped our understanding of technology develop. Another thing that worked well was our commitment to re film each scene to make sure the outcome was substantially good. One thing that I would do differently is bring an outfit that I would wear specifically for each scene to ensure that there was no differences within the film that would confuse some of the audience, as in our film in one scene I am wearing one outfit then we used footage from a different day but it was the same scene and I was in different clothes so it didn't look as good as it would have if I was in the same clothes, and I also wasn't in the exact same location which is a minor fault that can be seen a little if you was highly analysing the film. Another thing that I would do differently is think about all of the location more efficiently next time to ensure that there would be no disruptions for the camera or the audio.
What did others say about your productions?
One thing that was repeatedly said about our production was that it was a clever idea to incorporate the dream because it wasn't extremely confusing to understand what was happening because it was a small time scale so that people didn't have to think too much about what happened in the last scene. With the incorporation of the effects and transitions it was recognisable (also with the acting) that I had gone into a dream and that I was dreaming about something that in the end came true.
What have you learnt from completing this task?
From carrying out this task, it has enabled me to develop a series of skills and gain more knowledge about the ways of media, filming and editing. Along with this, the task has helped me in different ways but it also helped my in correlation with the feedback of my teacher and others that have watched the film. Another thing that I have learnt from this task, is that next time all tasks within the project should be split evenly to get an equal coverage from each person for the amount of work they each put in, therefore the overall outcome will be shared equally and each person will get their deserved grade as everything was decided fairly. Something else that I have learnt a long this process also is the ways around the editing software, premiere and how to carry out different functions within the software. By taking in new information from this task, it will benefit me in the future when I carry out other editing tasks, my knowledge would be improved and my finals tasks will have progressed.
Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your final film opening?
As a result of me developing new skills and taking in new information it will help me in my final film opening as I will have more understanding of the camera and editing software, which will benefit me quite a lot. As I have learnt about different angles, I will know what type of angles to use in different types of scenes to get the best outcome of the film opening. Also with me having learnt how to edit properly, I know that I will be able to spend an equal amount of time on filming as I could editing because I know that I would be able to complete editing in a certain amount of time given as I understand my ways around editing. In addition, from this task overall I have just learnt about camera and editing, I have learnt how playing a part in a team well can have an efficient amount of outcome on the final task as it will reflect through the efforts of the acting and the time put into the editing.

Institution- Logo, Big/Small Budget

us Within this lesson we was informed about creating our own logo. We learnt about the difference between an independent film and a mainstream film. There is quite a big difference between independent and mainstream but the majority of films people watch today are mainstream films because there are minimal independent cinemas in a lot of areas. Mainstream films consist of laughter and sadness. They make you feel emotion compared to independent films as they make you think more, of which the enigma code applies and they are associated with critical success.

Cinemas have different tactical ways of making their money. One way that they make their money is through selling their tickets to different films. A studio that the movie is made with leases the movie to a cinema for a set period of time. Within the first few weeks of the movie being released the cinema only receives around 20-25% of the profit from the ticket. The longer the movie is in the cinema, the more the percentage decreases so the cinema will get less money the longer the movie has been in the cinema.

Concession is the main way that cinemas achieve their targets and make most of their money. Without the concession stands in the cinema, the chains would not make half of the money tat they make today and they would not remain in business. Although the cinema doesn't receive the entire cost from the concession, they do receive a percentage which is where they make most of their money.

Thirdly, they do make some more money from the onscreen advertisements. Sometimes along with leasing a movie to a cinema, they sometimes pay cinema to play a trailer that may sponsor their movie. Or another theory could be that advertisers will pay the cinema to broadcast their ad. If it was a blockbuster as a trailer, the money they receive would be higher because it is wider broadcast film.

How a film gets into a cinema:
  • Someone gets an idea for a type of movie they wish too create.
  • The creator makes an outline to promote the idea.
  • One of the studio makers or an independent investor denies to purchase rights to the film.
  • After this stage people are brought together to make the film e.g. screenwriter, director, producer and cast.
  • The film is then filmed and sent of to a studio.
  • The studio makes a licensing contract with a distributor company.
  • The distribution company will then come to an agreement on how many prints/copies to produce.
  • The distribution company shows the movie to prospective buyers representing the theatres.
  • The buyers have to negotiate with the distribution company to know what they wish to lease on the terms of the lease agreement.
  • The final prints are given to the theatres a few days before the opening day.
  • The theatre shows the movie for a specified number of weeks.
  • You then purchase a ticket for the movie.
  • At the end of the period of engagement, the theatre sends the print back to the distribution company and it then progresses to make the payments on the lease agreement.
What does a distributor do?
A film distributor has the responsibility of the marketing of the film. The distribution company is usually different from the production company. Distribution deals are an important type part of gaining business and are vital for the financial status. They create film releases to ensure they reach big audiences and make a profit. They aim to sell and publicise films for the media, different marketing partners and the cinemas.

Juno Evaluation

Evaluation
You are editing your own footage- how did your filming go?
Within this task there was a variety of shots that needed to be filmed and to be analysed before choosing the right one too upload to the project.  We had to chose specific shots that match up similarly to the juno video. The footage overall did slightly match juno, however there was some shots that I filmed that didn't quite match juno. For example some of them we directed renae to remain walking on the path yet the camera needed to stay still but we carried on walking whilst she was walking. Another problem with the footage was that the camera was extremely wobbly at some points in the film, this normally due to a panning shot being required and not having enough balance on the camera to make the shot a clean pan. We got the majority of shots the same but not the camera angles the same.
Was your storyboard accurate?
My storyboard that I drew was accurate, even more than the filming. There was intricate details within the storyboard that matched up to the film such as making sure we drew every single second within the juno film. Sometimes we overlapped the timings on the storyboard to ensure that transitions were smooth between each shot. The storyboard could have been improved by adding even more drawings such as drawing two pictures for one shot, such as the one where the walking feet appear in the background whilst she was walking towards the camera.
What were your strengths and weaknesses in the group?
Weaknesses that were present within the group was that we couldn't all understand each others perspective of each shots and had corresponding views of what location we should film each shot from. Another weakness that we had between the group was with who got to do each job but we shortly came to a decision. Our strengths was listening to each others views and having to analyse each position and to allocate what was best for one another. Another strength of us was whilst filming we listened to each other whilst being directed, so whilst Leah was telling Renae what to do, I followed with their conversation to make sure our filming was the best outcome we produced.
Did you get all the footage needed?
We needed to collect a lot of footage and we just about filmed all the shots required to make up all of the film sequence. Some footage that we would need to improve if we was to film this again would have to be the first shot as it was quite wobbly and the shot of the walking towards the camera and next to the shop could have been filmed again to make sure the camera was stationary whilst Renae carried on walking. Footage that could also be needed again was the part where the feet are filmed then zoomed into the walking feet in the background, this could have all been done with the camera but we didn't think of it at the time and used two different shots and mixed them with a video transition of premiere.
What technical skills either camera or premiere did you learn? How does it compare to the original?
There was a majority of skills that were to be learnt in the process of making this juno film sequence. One of the main skills that I learnt was on premiere and how you edit various amounts of clips to make a whole film run smoothly. A main technique on premiere that I learnt was how to slow down different clips or speed them up to make them match the original juno sequence. Another technical skill that we learnt was with the camera , how to change the exposure on the camera to make the shots look different types of effect however, we learnt to keep the exposure neutral so that when we came to edit the footage, we could change the exposure and contrast to how we wished and so that when we put the required effect over the footage it would look the best it could.
What went well- What I learnt- What I will take with me to the next production
During the whole making of our juno task the main thing that went well was the co-operation that we all had with each other in the group. Although we sometimes didn't understand each others point of view at first for the shot takings, we learnt that be efficiently listening to one another it would result in a good making of the film sequence. What I learnt individually from this task was that filming has to be contributed to with hard work and team work. Also form this I learnt that whilst editing, many shots have to be re-filmed several of times so when it comes to gathering all the footage together you can have a nice selection of shots for each point so that we could choose which one is closest the video that we was copying. I learnt this as I had an advantage with the fact that some shots we did film more than once, however we didn't do this for the full film. As for the next production, from this juno task I will take with me the new knowledge of filming shots several of times to make editing easier in the long run, and the fact that whilst editing on premiere to import all of the footage one by one and edit each shot separately to make the process easier.

Film Pitch

Locked Up
Within this lesson we presented our film pitch production presentations to the class and we received different feedback from multiple different people and our teacher.

Relevant/intriguing/catchy film title?
  • 'locked up'- catchy makes you think of what is going to happen throughout the film.
  • There is a simple yet catchy title.
  • Good title which gets people interested.
  • Short and snappy.
  • Simple but catchy.
  • Yes and I love the description.
Interesting characters and appropriate cast?
  • All characters are suited to the film type and suit the plot line.
  • Characters and Actors that are used are extremely interesting and fit with the plot line.
  • Each character is individual yet they work well together.
  • There is interesting characters that fit perfectly with the cast choice.
  • The decision of characters and actors and interesting and fit with the theme set.
  • Lovely and well though out character personalities and how the would fit with the narrative.
Was interest created for the audience? Enigma Codes?
  • It makes the audience intrigued towards what will occur next and the enigma codes asked are based along the lines of what will happen to the characters and what other events of the board game will occur.
  • There are frequently asked questions (enigma code) and for this reason it keeps the interest high throughout the film.
  • Not all of the film was described so the audience is intrigued to know more about what is going to occur.
  • There is frequently asked questions which keep the interest levels high.
  • Yes with relevant influences.
Narrative suitable for target audience? Will it attract customers?
  • The Target Audience is middle which is good for the type of genre that has been allocated for the film. It will attract horror/thriller fans as it has a classic names which will influence people to watch this film, because if they are this type of fan they will instantly recognise the type of genre through the catchy title.
  • The narrative fits the genre because it doe suit the target audience.
  • It is hard to follow the storyline as there was a lot of description for the story.
  • It will attract customers although there is too much writing and detail within the presentation which could make you switch off.
  • Thoroughly thought out and great emphasis on language analysis.

Does the narrative fit the genre? Are the conventions in the place?
  • The narrative does fit well as the genre shows thriller and the narrative of the film is borderline horror.
  • The narrative fits the genre.
  • Good time frame however borderline horror. Be careful or you might deter the audience and the genre research is good but still feels a bit like a horror.
Is the film different?
  • It combines many different films together in one whole, with associations of different documentaries and programmes but nothing as a whole film has been seen before and it has different aspects of films yet to be seen.
  • Its like a usual thriller, it doesn't have any new aspects.
  • It looks different however sounds very common compared to other thrillers.
  • Yes; interesting storyline.
Good ideas for the marketing film?
  • The ideas for marketing are good for the audience type because many middle aged professionals will frequently watch TV and will see trailer being advertised. The poster is also another way of good advertisement because this could be seen online or in the cinema.
  • When the film will be played was well thought about.
  • Trailer that fits the film.
Would you buy them film?
  • Yes
  • Yes
  • Yes
  • Yes
  • Yes

Film Language

Within the lesson taught on film language we learnt many different to look out for in a film and to question why and what they are doing to make the film as good as it is. What we learnt was to look out for camera, sound, editing, mise en scene, colour and binary opposites.

Boyz in the Hood.

With boyz in the hood we was told to analyse the film language of camera, sound, editing and mise en scene. Many of the points that I picked up from this film is extremely varied.
Camera
The acronym used to describe the camera is FAM, which stands for frame, angle, movement. The first shot that the audience sees during this film is of a stop sign. The camera uses the zoom technique to emphasise the message of stop, which relates to what was played just before that however, there was no content to be seen. As for the second shot, the camera is panning across the group of children from a long distance point of view. This type of shot they intended to use to introduce the characters first of all to the audience. The first variation of a shot that they show is an up close shot towards the one boy and the other three; the rest of the group. These type of shots were filmed intentionally to send subliminal messages to the audience about which member of the group has most confidence and could show the segregation of future events in the film. In addition, the camera also uses two quick shots from one to the other to emphasise the fights, when they are fighting in the classroom, to the street fight involving the men. This could be two scenes intentionally put next to each other to show the continuous amount of fights that occur in LA. Within this film they use numerous amounts of different frame types depending of the situation, but many of them are level and are long distance which is used to show a lot of events going on which could symbolise that there are many different negative events that occur daily in America. As far as angles go, they don't use a variety of angles, the main angle use is level, neither high or low. However, one variation of angle used is when they focus on the blood, they go from a head shot of the boy, then they create a high angle which is as though it is being viewed from the children from above. This angle of the blood could create a sense of guilt from the audience because it is almost like we are looking down on the people that died or was wounded, which is the message they are trying to put across to stop.
Mise en Scene
The acronym for this was CLAMPS. Costumes that are used within this are varied however they are based mainly on east London outfits. They use the costumes within this film to represent the class for example, the teacher, especially is wearing shirt dresses and her body language contributes to her superiority. Moreover the main costumes of this are focused on the black jumpers which is the representation of gangs, however the black colour could represent danger and darkness of their personalities. Although, the younger boys costumes do change to shirts which shows the sophistication that they wish upon in the classrooms, in correlation with this, they boy trey is the only child in the classroom that is wearing a shirt, this could be a small hint towards the audience in the beginning to show that  he is soon going to be picked on by the teacher. With costume, I believe the teacher  is wearing business attire and so is the little boy. This is a symbol to show superiority against the other children in the classroom. On the topic of lighting, the only change in the opening scene was from the very opening sequence of a black screen to the screen of the camera on the people. Actors that are involved within this are all the majority of black however the teacher is white. This could show the old segregation of how whites used to think that they had more power than the blacks, on the other hand with the boy being black and being asked to teach, this could show the future equality rules. Props used within this film play a significant part of this opening, especially the poster and the map. The poster is an important prop within this as it shows what had happened with president and what the whole voice over was about. There are a few posters which symbolises his importance, it is clear that because the posters are in the crime scene which correlates with the voice over in the beginning scene. There was a man speaking talking about presidency and there was sudden gun shots, this scene where the posters are shown recalls the recent talking of what happened with the gun shots. Another important prop was the map, I believe this to be a important prop because it symbolises what the young boy feels strongly about but also puts across a message about the film and an early hint of what the future conflict could be about within the film. As for the setting in this film it is based in a school in central LA. With it being based in a school this could represent the innocence of the children but also how the shooting didn't deserve to happen. Moreover, the stop sign also plays a huge part as a prop as it says an eternal message instantly towards the audience watching the film. It is straight after the voice over and the sound of the shouting and with a sign saying stop this relates with the events that just occurred, informing the audience that the producers and the majority of people that watch the film are looking for events like this to stop.
Sound
The acronym we was given to analyse the film language is MCDOVED. Within this film opening there was the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sound. The first bit of non-diegetic was when the young boy was walking down the path and passed the fighting. Only he noticed the fighting but the boys who was being violent didn't notice him. A voice over was also used in the beginning of the opening scene which talked about the gun shooting and how black Americans are getting treated. This voice over is off screen but with there being a voice over, in this as well is little conversations and gun shots and the radio, but only a blank screen with no visual content. Emotions at the beginning of the scene seem as though they are extremely tense however, they run straight into being upset and hasty. The emotions of each character are different especially when the children find the crime scene. Some of their emotions are shown as brave however some are showed as shocked at what is before their eyes. With the accents in the film opening, they all each have significant accents which contributes to their character and the setting they are based in. Along with the sound and their accents, they also use crude language which includes swearing, and what is strange about the use of this language is that it is mainly used by the younger actors within the film opening.
Editing
One main sequence of editing that they used was transitions. They used a transition by focusing on the blood within the crime scene then it faded into the drawings produced by the children. Both scenes correlate with each other due to what is in the pictures, instead of the children drawings being innocent like the children are presented, they are of violent events including blood, which shows what the previous events were like during America, especially the president shooting. Another bit of editing that stands out in the beginning is the single quick shot from a black screen to the stop sign. This is a symbol representing what the voice over was just talking about and a way to try and send a message to the audience that events like this should not be taking place. Another type of editing that they have used within this film opening is the effect of vignette this gives the feeling of mystery and wonder towards the audience.

The Matrix

To analyse The Matrix we was told to focus on the analysis of colour, binary opposites, male/female, good vs evil.
Colour
To start focusing on the colour of this opening scene, the dominating colour of the scene has an over cast of grey/black. However, the only colour that we see at first is a bright white light which gives the audience a subliminal idea that the film is to do with mystery and danger. The light that we see at first is the light of a torch but it is the harsh difference of a bright white light coming from the torch, cutting through the pitch black atmosphere. This could show connotations that there are sharp movements within this film that cut up the film making it difficult to understand. Another point to do with the colour within the film opening is the fact that all of the colours used corresponds with their outfits. They used the black to be associated with the woman because she is in an all black outfit yet doesn't want to be seen at all, where as the police and the detectives have a little bit of colour on them, even though they are trying to de discrete they still want the woman to know they are there so that she gets worried. However this does not go to plan and with the colour, the bright lights represent how by adding colour to the scene causes more disruption. Another colour also used is a minimal bit of red, produced from the car. Red as a colour has connotations of danger and blood, of which this colour could be a little message to the audience as a warning for what is to come later in the opening. The red appears agin when the woman is being chased on top of the building and the camera also adds to the feeling that the red gives towards the audience. With the camera angle being below and underneath the action, this could be symbolism that there is danger which lies beneath all of the different stages that occur in the film.
Binary Opposites
As for binary opposites meaning that there is something or someone that opposes one another. Binary opposites was the theory in media developed by Levi Strauss and there are many different opposites that revolve around Strauss' theory that is involved with the media. The binary opposite focused on in this film opening is mainly good vs evil. The good presented in this film opening are the police and the evil- the woman. A normal stereotype in films is that then women are more weak than the men, although in this film opening it presents the woman over ruling the men, but is still presented as evil as she has more of the power. Although the under cover police and the actual police look as though they are related with one another in terms of this film opening, there is a significant difference between them due to their costumes. The undercover police are dressed in suits and the police are in their usual attire. Another type of binary opposite presented in this film opening is the difference of male and female. The men in this are the ones that dominate most of this cast however, with there being one woman at first it makes her look vulnerable; suddenly this is seen as not the case. She is the least vulnerable which turns the whole plot line and doesn't make it an normal estimated event in a film. Along with the binary opposite, the camera angle is also associated with the opposite genders in the opening sequence. With the below shot of the police being involved, this could show to the audience that they are extremely behind the woman and the whole version of events that have happened so far in the film. This could show the opposition of both the males and female that throughout the film they may switch between being behind one another as both of them have shots that portray them as being either superior or innocent compared to each other. Also there is a slight use of non-diegetic sound when the woman is fighting the police upstairs, the police downstairs don't realise yet it is still obvious towards the audience.

 UP
With Up we was informed to focus on passage of time, sound, mise on scene and camera.
Passage of Time.
With the passage of time, this is what the majority of this sequence is focused on and how their lives have been together, however the signature act that represents this is the continuous run of different ties being fastened by the woman around her husbands neck. This sequence emphasises how much time they spend with each other and how they have developed traditions with each other such as the ties. Another type of passage of time presented is the cloud watching, which is a normal type of time passing act, however they use this within the film to represent events that they wish to occur such as having children. This is a good transition to help the film sequence go quicker because they make it understandable of how much time they have spent with each other and how their lives tales link one by one event with each other.
Sound
As for the sound, the music used throughout the opening sequence runs smoothly until something happens to interrupt the scene such as the tree falling on the house during the storm. The pitch goes a bit more sinister to emphasise how the event caused them grief as they had to spend their savings again, also with them finding out that she is ill, the music goes extremely dull and slower, there is not much tune to it, this shows the audience that there is bad news, along with the actions they show, as they do not use and words within this sequence. The emotion is only portrayed in the film opening throughout the sound they show. For example when they are dreaming about their future together, the tune is sweet and symbolises happiness where as when they find out bad news, the tune turns into something negative.
Mise en Scene
As for the costume used within this film opening, the actors customer used are quite similar throughout the whole sequence. Such as the woman wearing dresses and the man wearing suits. Moreover, the lighting shown within this film opening is changed quite a few times without, the difference of the lighting is quite obvious, when they are having fun in the park, all the colours used during this are bright and portray joy and calmness, such as yellow. Where as the lighting when they are told the woman is ill, the lighting goes dark to relate with the mood. Pathetic fallacy is shown within this such as when there is a storm this reflects the mood that they show the audience. Actors used within this are only two main characters, which it makes it easy for a story to be told as it only needs to be told through two people. The main prop that this film revolves around is the house however, this particular film sequence is mainly based on the money jar and the tyre. Both of these props introduce disruption of equilibrium and create mini events that effect the state of normality.
Camera
With the camera, the main shots used within the film sequence are eye level shots too show that there is no tension between one another. Both the actors have the same type of shots and there isn't any high level shots which show intimidation. A high level/birds eye shot is used for them both when they are dreaming about their future together, the high level shot could show that their dreams go so far that they love each other too much that they dream about life together too much.

Cape Fear
With Cape Fear we was told to analyse the mise en scene and the camera within the scene of Cady's Release.
Camera
There is only two main camera shots that are shown during this film scene. One of them being of him inside the prison, there is no immediate change into another location, then the second being him outside the prison and him walking past all the prisoners. The first shot on this film sequence is first of all seeing cady's back. The back shot of cady can represent how people are always feeling intimidated of him so they don't seem to confront him and always stay in the background near him. The shot before seeing his back it is a panning shot down of a close frame of the photos that obviously have a close relation to him, this gives the audience a clue to what and who is associated with his character. The other main shot is of Cady walking outside of the prison and it is a variation of a shot opposed to the first shot, with his back being the main focus. The second shot of his face corresponds with the dialogue. Using a back shot of Cady could show that he is powerful and people feel patronised by him where as with the shot being of his front and him walking towards the camera this also shows bravery and power from a different aspect. However, there is less power there as the guard intimidates him as he walks out asking if there was anyone there to meet him. This could suggest he doesn't have much family and can't rely on many people, hence why he is in prison.
Mise En Scene
The highlighted costumes used in this are the police outfits and the prisoners attire. It shows a clear tension held between the two and who has more authority. With Cady being topless then putting a top on as he walks out, this shows how he is initially different to the rest of the prisoners, only as he is just being let out of prison. Lighting used within this film opening does not play a huge part and doesn't affect how the audience views the film however there is the one point when he is walking outside the prison and the weather and the sky corresponds with the mood and goes a little dull which could be to describe his personality as a character. Moreover, with the actors within this sequence, Cady is only the highlighted character within this film opening and we can tell that he will be the focus of the film because the other actors within the scene are all grouped together depending on what type of group they fall under. As for props, this film scene doesn't signify many props within the short amount of time that they film this sequence for, the main one that does have some relevance to the film are the posters which are seen in the beginning shot. They have some kind of association with power and the army, which could relate to his past and give the audience some kind of idea that he believes he is omnipotent. His shirt could also be highlighted as a prop because it could show how he is different from the rest of the prisoners or it could show innocence of his character that he has to show respect by putting on a shirt when coming into contact with police or security.

Premiere Editing Practise

Within the lesson we was taught how to use premiere for the first time and it was to ensure that we learn the basics of the programme. From this lesson we was told to import footage of this dancing animals and to match music with it also. With this we had to cut out all of the black parts within the footage to make the video look fluent and professional.

Audience

In the lesson today we learnt about how the audience is viewed in different areas and the way that the audience is associated with the media. We was asked many different questions to do with media and film.

Who makes the audience?
As a discussion we came up with the idea that the gatekeepers make the audience  because they are the ones that decide what the media produces and puts out to the public. If it wasn't for the gatekeepers, many things that are given out in the media, wont be viewed as much unless there are people like the gatekeepers that have a say on what is put out to an audience.

Can the media exist without an audience?
In my opinion I believe the media cant exist without an audience because too carry on producing more texts in the media, they need a majority of opinion to know what type of viewers enjoy what. They need too know what interests others to produce similar things, because there could be an idea that isn't improved if there was no audience to go feedback.

Can the audience exist without the media?

An audience can't exist as a unit, and as a big group without the media. Without it you wont know who fits into what group without boundaries of viewing specific media types. I believe also that the audience cant be there without producers releasing types of medias because an audience is an audience unless you know what interests people. This could be discovered by changing different types of medias to see what type of people enjoy what type of media.

Who is more powerful the media or the audience?

Although the media have the right to release what they want when they want, without an audience the media will not be able to improve and they will not receive the views they desire.

Within this lesson we also learnt about the uses of gratifications, which meant that there is one audience that believes everything and anything that they are told. This shows that the media can indoctrinate many minds and whatever the media says many people can instantly believe. The inventors of this theory was Blumler and Katz. An acronym that we learnt in correlation with this theory was PIES. Which stands for Personal Identification, Information, Entertainment and Social Interaction.

Personal Identification
One film that relates to me with personal identification would be The Last Song, within this film the event that I relate to is to the father falling ill on holiday and having an unexpected heart attack. I relate to this as when I went away my dad had the same problem and it was basically a copy of events that occurred in my life, but in a film.
Information
Being apart of an audience of some kind of media, anyone wants to know what is happening and why people are watching what is being presented. By the use of information, this is a way that topics and issues are spread around such as the news or informative programmes such as documentaries. Recently watching the news I have found out a lot of information that I would never have found out anywhere else if it wasn't for the media. I found out about the affairs happening between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, another topic that I also found out about was how the referendum voting isn't affecting the economy yet.
Entertainment
Entertainment is a method people use to amuse theirselves and keep up with one another. As my personal entertainment, I use social media or listen to music. Many people do this as well as using social media is a good way to keep in contact with friends and family and music is a good way to calm yourself down. However, the media use entertainment as a way to promote products to people or to present shows that will persuade people different ways on different topics and views.
Social InteractionThe media can often represent social interaction within programmes or films, however, by being involved with the media it is usually using some kind of technology and sways away from being socially interactive with others. An example of how I  have experienced social interaction, is how me and a group of my friends talk about recent events such as what news films have come out in the cinema and what new programme is being shown on the TV. This is something else that is also influenced by media.

The Film Industry

What do we mean when we use the word film?

A film is a recorded event that includes moving images and tells a story throughout. It combines emotions and an evolution of movements and different stories. Many millions of films has evolved over the years due to the new inventions of technology which include black and white and different production types producing a variety of films. A film was introduced as one of the first pieces of technology to produce a type of entertainment but was used on the material of a film in an old recording camera.

Do you think it means the same as the word ‘movie'?

The word movie and film are interpreted that they mean the same word however ‘movie’ is generally used by Americans and films are usually used by English people which is the typical stereotype. A movie is known as something that has been released into the cinema and is a film that is well discovered and money is made from that, for example many films are called mini movies such as frozen fever compared to the movie frozen, however both make money from them.

And what about the word cinema?
The word cinema I believe to be different to a movie and a film as it is somewhere where a majority of people go to watch a newly released movie. A cinema is different to a movie and a film because films used to be watched on a tape recorder as they used to be recorded on the material of film and movies can be watched on updated technology such as laptops and phones. Where as in a cinema they are shown by being projected on a big screen through a projector. Cinema is known as another word for a moving picture which is similar to a film although a film is a motion picture as it was created way before cinema and movie.

Top Ten Movies Report
My top ten movies vary between the genre types, from sport/drama too thrillers. I also have a few Disney in my top ten movies such as Tangled and Finding Dory however these are the only ones that correlate with each other. Many of these films don't have the same actors or the same plot line, however they do have the same type of genres.

How do you find out about a film?
I can find out about films in various of different ways. one way that I can find out about them is through the media. Newly released films are shown on the TV either through the trailer or on the news talking about the red carpet premiere. Or another way films are seen to be newly released is by going on the cinema websites to see what new films are out or are soon to be released.
What makes you want to see a film?
Ways that films are presented in the media is an alluring way to persuade you to go to the cinema or buy a film. Films are presented to us in a trailer but in a trailer, they only show us the best parts of it and what bits of the film can describe it the most. The way people are persuaded to see a film is mainly the trailer, or by the media discussing it on social media about a famous actor being involved, or the description used to describe the film.

How do you know what to expect from a film?
From a film, before watching it you don't know what to expect. You will only get an idea of what to expect either by watching the trailer or by reading the book. Otherwise, to get an idea of what the film will be about, you would either need to look at the film poster and see what the film poster represents or what the online videos are showing as a sneak peek of the film.

What are you paying for when you buy a cinema ticket or buy/rent a DVD?
By purchasing a cinema ticket or buying or renting a DVD you are paying towards the film you desire. The location of the money varies and depends on the film or the distributor. More powerful distributors such as Disney, Universal and Paramount will receive 80/20 of the shares, however sometimes the cinema could also receive this amount as a chance of equality. It is usual that the distributors get around 40% of the money and is split half and half of the 60% between theatrical and DVD.

Where do you watch films? At home? At the cinema?
As my personal preference I watch the majority of films at home due to the fact of not being sure wether I will definitely appreciate the film. I mainly watch my movies on film sites such as Netflix or sky movies. For the most time I usually wait for them to come out on these type of websites because I wasn't positive that I wanted to spend money on a film I don't personally enjoy. However, I go to the cinema at least once a month to see a film that I know id enjoy due to the actors present in the film or the genre type.

Do you think there are differences between watching a film in a cinema and watching it at home on a DVD? If you think there are what are they?
I believe that there isn't much different to watching a film either at the cinema or at home only because it will be the same film wether you are at home or the cinema. Although you may concentrate more in the cinema because you especially payed and went there to watch a film and there aren't as many distractions in the cinema as there are in your home.

Are there come films that you HAVE to see at the cinema or does it not matter?
In my opinion I don't think there is many films that I wish to see almost instantly when they are released. The only films that I feel the need to see are the ones with my favourite actors or actresses or the second part of a film that I enjoyed previously. Other than these factors I don't feel the need to constantly go to the cinema to see newly premiered films.

What do you understand by the word 'industry'?
Hearing the word industry instantly makes me picture business' and work. An industry I also relate with hard work and commitment but it makes me think also of raw materials and technology. There are many different industries which make me think of a variety of things such as media in relation with the film industry but the British industry makes me think of production and construction.

Which Column does film go into product or services?
Although a film serves someone some entertainment,  it doesn't serve everyone who comes across it entertainment. On the other hand, film does fit into the product list due to it being a product for everyone. Even if you don't like it, it is still a product and is a product of the media/film industry.

From the industries you identified, which produce the things we NEED and the things we simply WANT? Do all industries try to make consumers feel they want or need their products/services?
