Semiotics

Letters to Juliet

In this film poster there are many different things happening with in this that represents many events. The denotations of this film are mainly represented through the two people in the image. They are the main focus of the picture which could represent that they are the main characters involved in the film. I can also see that there are letters pinned to a wall which links in with the title when it says 'letters'. Also the denotations from the film poster is showing that the film genre is to do with romance due to the hearts and the colours used, also their background is mainly yellow and blue.

Furthermore the connotations of the colours used within the film poster of blue and yellow are both calming colours that could portray that the film is to do with justice and peace. The yellow colour could represent happiness which could be to do with the couple that are sitting on the wall. Also the blue colour could represent royalty. With the blue colour potentially connotating royalty it could also show for boys, which links royalty with the man in the film poster.

The connotations of the font and text of 'letters to Juliet' shows that the film is to do with love and romance, this is shown through the colour red but also Juliet.  The use of Juliet is normally associated with Romeo and Juliet however this is changed to associate it with love, and how Romeo and Juliet are generally known of being together, this could show how the couple on the poster could end up together in the film. As the 'to' in the title is underlined this represents how people talk in letters when writing them at the beginning.

Other feelings that I also receive from the colour of her dress could be that although a pink/red colour is to do with love, it could also represent danger and awareness. There could be cautious actions against the girl in the picture because the boy is also turned in the other direction, which could suggest that the boy wants to associate himself with the girl yet there are problems in his way.

The preferred reading of this media text is that the creator wants the audience to view the poster as though the  girl and the boy are in love however there are a few drawbacks within the poster that could suggest other events that face them during the film. Also the media text could also try and show the reader that the film is only to do with love due to the amount of love heart symbols on the poster, and all the harmonious colours used within the poster.

The oppositional reading could be that the media text is just a trick and the whole film could be a tragedy ending. The boy and the girl could be seen by the reader to not actually like each other because of their body language, the girl doesn't seem to incorporate herself with the boy which could suggest during the film he could be single and she could be in a relationship and by the end the boy doesn't manage to get anywhere.

The negotiated reading of this media text could be between the boy and the girl having opposite story lines within the film, however, the closeness of them both and their emotions to one another could mean otherwise. The title could also suggest another negotiated reading, with it saying 'letters to Juliet' it could show that the love is only focused on the girl and not focused on the boy which could be a fight between good and evil.
